Father / Daughter Hike

17 08 2008

IMG_8815.JPGToday I took Deanna hiking in the Sierras. We’ve been talking about going hiking forever but it always seems like something comes up. So this weekend I just decided I was going to make it happen. Shoot, the kid is almost 16, I don’t have much time left! So I got up early, made us some pancakes for breakfast, packed some ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch, and we hit the road!

We went up to Rancheria Falls up above Huntington Lake. I figured it would be a good way to spend the afternoon; Not too far to drive to, it’s a short hike in, and it’s a beautiful waterfall. We had a really cool time just shooting the breeze on the way up. We got there around 11 and after passing the trail-head and almost getting the truck stuck turning around (what’s a hike without a little adventure?), we got on the trail, and finally to the falls.

It was absolutely beautiful up there today. Nice and cool and only a few people on the trail. We found a nice shady rock formation to have lunch on and then we just kicked it together, talking and taking in God’s amazing creation. It was really a good time and we’re going to make it a point to do this together more often.

Pictures are in the photo section to your right.

Shasta Climb is Off

20 05 2008

Bummer. My co-worker Peter and I were going to climb Mt. Shasta in two weeks but after looking at the latest conditions we’ve decided not to make the trek this year. Normally you want to climb this mountain when it’s covered in snow because otherwise you are dealing with a lot of loose rock, which is hard to hike up. The danger of getting hit in the nog with a rock goes up as well. The snow pack on the route up is about 50% of normal and so Peter, having done this 3 times already, felt that it would not be worth our time to do it this year.

So I’m disappointed, but there’s nothing to be done about it. There’s no arguing with Mother Nature. We’ll plan again next year. I always try to look on the bright side though and hey, the way I look at it this change of plans saves me two days of vacation and a few hundred bucks! I’m sure my bike didn’t want to sit in the garage all weekend anyway.

Mt. Shasta

19 11 2007

2008 is looking to be an adventurous year. I just spoke to a co-worker of mine and he’s leading a team to climb Mt. Shasta next year. I’m totally in! Ever since I did Half Dome I’ve been wanting to go on another big hike. This is going to be awesome. I’ll be sharing more information as our trip firms up.
