Today’s Bicycle Ride: The Millerton Metric

27 06 2009

Today I rode my first sanctioned ride; The Millerton Metric. 71 miles, 3500 feet of climbing. Sound tough? It was extremely tough. But it’s really part of a much larger ride called the Climb to Kaiser which apparently is one of the 10 hardest rides around. But let’s not talk about that.

The ride started off well, we got on the road at 6am for a 23 mile jaunt through town and into the foothills to the infamous first climb of the day: Wildcat Grade. It also happened to be the place where I got my first flat tire of the day. Luckily the group that organizes this ride is VERY organized and a dude pulled up in a pickup with a bike stand, tools, and plenty of tubes. It took him about 5 minutes to fix me up and get me back on the road. These guys are awesome! So with a new tire it was time to climb Wildcat. Wildcat is only 3.5 miles long but is extremely steep. I knew it would be the most difficult climb of the day for me. But I managed to get up it and stopped at the summit for the first rest stop.

After a brief rest, it’s 3.5 miles down the back of Wildcat at speeds of around 40Mph. It’s amazing how much more fun it is to go downhill than it is coming up! We had heard some bad news though about a rider who had a cow run out into the road so we were a little cautious. Apparently he hit the cow pretty hard and broke his collar bone. Cycling is dangerous! I had a little scare with a farm animal myself, dodging a rooster who was goofing off in the road. After that though, it was mostly smooth sailing until the turn to head up Burrough Valley road.

This is where I got my next flat. I was trailing Doug and we noticed a clicking sound coming from his wheel. I came up behind him and saw something sticking out of his tire. We stopped to take a closer look and realized it was a safety pin! It was at that point I realized my back tire was going flat again, so we were both going to need to do a change. We had the equipment to do the job but lucky for us, a support vehicle came buy with spare tubes and a real pump. We spent 15 minutes fixing the bikes and then went on to kill the long grinding climb to the next rest stop.

At the stop we ran into our buddy Roderick from church who was working the stop. He’s a great dude and it was cool seeing a familiar face. We rested and chatted a bit and then headed out.

From there the route goes up to Hwy 168, over to Prather an then down to Millerton lake. At this point we were started to feel the burn and Dave was cramping up. We made it to the Millerton rest stop to power up, but it was now 100° and we were really starting to feel fatigued. With only 13 miles to go though, we weren’t about to quit.

We started the decent to the city and honestly, this is where the ride got extremely tough. The heat was becoming unbearable and every little climb felt like a mountain. Once I reached the city, I was thanking God for flat ground but even then it was a chore to pedal. My legs just didn’t have anything left, the heat was draining me of my energy, and to top it off, I was up against a headwind. It honestly felt like I was just letting the weight of my legs push the pedals down because I could not muster enough of my own strength to really crank hard.

We finally pulled up to the finish line 6 hours and 15 minutes after beginning our trek. This was over an hour faster than we had planned for ourselves and that felt really good, especially with the long rests we had at the rest stops.

Final thoughts? I am stoked. 8 weeks after I bought my first bike, I managed to complete a 71 miler. I am very pleased with how we did and now we have a benchmark for next year. It’s been an outstanding time of training and fellowship and I’m really glad I took on this hobby.

So now I’m just kicking it with a cheeseburger and a beer. No more dieting today, it’s time to celebrate!

20th Anniversary Trip to Pismo Beach

10 11 2008

IMG_9992.JPGWhat a great weekend! Michelle and I finished off our celebration of 20 years of marriage by heading to Pismo Beach for the weekend. We took off early Saturday morning, drove out toward Monterey and then picked up Hwy 1, heading south along the incredibly beautiful coastline. We stopped in Big Sur for lunch at Lucia’s then finished our drive to Pismo, arriving early in the afternoon.

We stayed at the Cottage Inn which is a great hotel. Our room backed right up against the ocean so we had a full view of the Pacific from our patio. The weather was so nice we were able to sleep with the windows wide open and listen to the ocean all night.

For dinner, we decided to try McClintock’s Steamers Restaurant. It was a nice dinner. Not the greatest food, but not bad for the price. The service was good though, and I really liked the comfortable, lively atmosphere.

Sunday we got up early and walked the beach for a few hours before packing up and heading to Avila Beach. Avila is really nice and we had a great lunch and some time to enjoy the ocean before heading back. It was a really great time together and a great place to spend a weekend.

More pictures to the right.

Shasta Climb is Off

20 05 2008

Bummer. My co-worker Peter and I were going to climb Mt. Shasta in two weeks but after looking at the latest conditions we’ve decided not to make the trek this year. Normally you want to climb this mountain when it’s covered in snow because otherwise you are dealing with a lot of loose rock, which is hard to hike up. The danger of getting hit in the nog with a rock goes up as well. The snow pack on the route up is about 50% of normal and so Peter, having done this 3 times already, felt that it would not be worth our time to do it this year.

So I’m disappointed, but there’s nothing to be done about it. There’s no arguing with Mother Nature. We’ll plan again next year. I always try to look on the bright side though and hey, the way I look at it this change of plans saves me two days of vacation and a few hundred bucks! I’m sure my bike didn’t want to sit in the garage all weekend anyway.

Sevendust!!!!!

17 05 2008

Oh yeah baby! Sevendust came out with a new album a few months ago… or maybe it was last month… anyway, they are touring and I’m going to see them!

Sevendust is hitting the House of Blues in beautiful Las Vegas Nevada! Michelle and I have been needing a getaway together so we’re taking the opportunity to head to the desert oasis for some serious Rock & Roll and relaxation.

If you don’t know who Sevendust is…. well then you really must suck…. at least a little. Honestly, they are one of the baddest metal bands out there, and in my mind really started the whole melodic metal trend in the 90’s where you have super chunky metal riffs coupled with melodic, multi-part harmonies in the chorus. These guys are a relentless touring band and Michelle and I have seen them probably a dozen times over the years. They just never get old. They truly are the AC-DC of modern metal if you ask me. Heavy, powerful and consistent. I mean just look at that picture! Is that not the epitome of Rock & Roll????

So I have this thing about wanting to stay at a new hotel every time I go to Vegas. Unfortunately since we do Vegas 2 or 3 times a year we’re running out of hotels to stay at. I also have a thing about not paying $300 a night for a crappy room just because it’s “trendy”. I mean come on… $250 a night to sleep in a fake pyramid? I could probably rest my nog on the point of the Giza Pyramid for less! So this time we’re staying way off strip at the new Suncoast Casino. It looks pretty cool and at it’s got a nice pool which is all Michelle cares about. Me, I could sleep in the back of a Buick in Vegas and be perfectly happy.

So I’m seeing my favorite band, in my favorite town, with my favorite girl. Seriously, does it get any better than that?

Summer is Here!

14 04 2008

Holy crap man…. mid April and we’re hitting the 90’s already! It was hot this weekend, but honestly, I loved it. I really despise the winter time and so I’m not about to complain about clear skies and warm sun! It made for a great weekend outdoors.

Saturday I jammed with the Alan Yerxa Band at Sober Stock and had a great time. Sober Stock is a festival for alcohol and substance abuse recovery groups. It’s a great time of fellowship, worship, and also education and support. There were about a dozen groups represented, the CHP and Fresno P.D. were there, three bands jamming; good times.

It’s funny though because as a musician you just expect certain things to go wrong with days like this. For one, the day ALWAYS runs late. Musicians are notorious for being late anyway and the first band never wants to go on stage on time because the crowd is always thin for the first set. But then there’s always at least one more mishap. Usually it’s the P.A. system not having enough power and cutting out, but this time our bass players amp decided to take a dump right as we started the first song. It was the perfect Spinal Tap moment as we continued on and he fought with his gear, finally switching out the amp just in time to finish the first song! That’s rock and roll right there.

Sunday was every bit as beautiful as Saturday but the sunny weather must have been wreaking havoc on musicians because during the worship set at church, Paul completely beefed one of the songs. Beefed it so bad that Kimberly actually stopped the song and made everyone start it over! Awesome! I think that’s a first for Clovis Hills.

So that is what we call in musical circles a Class ‘A’ Train Wreck! If you’ve been playing for any amount of time, you’ve caused one of those, believe me, so it was cool to be there for Paul’s “baptism” so to speak. I think it’s much funnier though because he’s our fearless leader, and let’s face it, when the boss screws up, I don’t care who you are, that’s funny!

After church Allen and I rode up to Bass Lake for a stogie and a few beers. The mountains were beautiful. I just love being on the bike and cruising through the forest, the smell of pine needles and wood in the air. You car drivers don’t even know what you’re missing.

Alright, last note…. I’m hoping to get some video up soon of the Alan Yerxa gig as well as the Clovis Hills worship night. I also bought a new video camera called a Flip Video. They are really small video cameras designed for super quick and easy video shooting, but the quality is very good. My plan is to copy Paul and do some video blogging here on the site; maybe some drum related videos or something. We’ll see how that goes.

Have a great week!
